US District Court Judge Orders FDA to take Action on Antibiotics in Animal Feed
In a story Maryn McKenna broke last night, Judge Theodore Katz of the Southern District of New York (largely NYC) has ordered the FDA to take action on it's 1977 finding that antibiotics in animal feed impact resistance in human populations. For 35 years, various interests have blocked further efforts to limit 'growth promoting' antibiotics in feed. This lawsuit, brought by Natural Resources Defense Council with the Center for
Science in the Public Interest, Food Animal Concerns Trust, Union of
Concerned Scientists, and Public Citizen, sought to restart the evaluation process and move away from the current voluntary participation supported by FDA.
